In the Treta Yuga, once upon a time, in the ancient kingdom of Mithila, there was a wise and just king named Janaka. He was a patron of learning and philosophy and had a council of learned Brahmins known as Parishad at his court. The council was responsible for debating and discussing various philosophical topics, and it was from these discussions that the Ancient Mithila University was born.

Akshapada Gautama "The founder of Nyaya Shastra"

The university became an important center of Nyaya Shastra and logical sciences founded by the great Saptarshi sage Akshapada Gautama. It was also very famous for the Nyaya Shastra and Logic from the 12th/13th to 15th century CE in the mediaeval period. It was located in the Mithila region, and the headquarter of the university was at the court of King Janaka. The Mithila school of Nyaya was an Indian school of Nyaya philosophy, which flourished from the 12th-13th to the 15th century in Mithila. According to Vidyabhusana, the science of logic developed out of parishad, councils of learned Brahmins. Students were not allowed to take any piece of written information with them after finishing their studies, to keep a monopoly on this subject.

The university had a unique way of teaching its students. Instead of relying on written texts, students were taught through oral traditions and debates. This helped to ensure that knowledge was passed down from generation to generation without any loss or corruption.

The Ancient Mithila University was a place where students from all over India came to study. They would spend years learning about logic, philosophy, and other subjects before returning home to share their knowledge with others. The university was a beacon of knowledge and wisdom in ancient India.

Parishad of the Ancient Mithila University

As time passed, the Ancient Mithila University slowly faded away into history. However, its legacy lives on in the many scholars who were educated there and in the knowledge that they passed down to future generations.
